Broncos Upset West Division Champion Chippewas

CLEVELAND -- Despite a 14-point second-half lead six minutes into the second half, the Mid-American Conference Tournament No. 2 seed Central Michigan could not hold off the 2010 MAC Player of the Year David Kool and Western Michigan, 69-60, in the quarterfinals at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday. Kool's jumper with 4:44 remaining gave the Broncos (18-14) their first lead of the contest, 56-54, and the Chippewas (15-15) couldn't regain the momentum they had to end the first half, going 2-for-13 from the field the rest of the way. CMU led by six early on a jumper by Jordan Bitzer at the 14:39 mark, 11-5, and pushed the lead to double-figures with four minutes to go, 27-17. The Maroon and Gold went into the break up nine, 31-22.

A layup by Amir Rashid gave Central Michigan its largest lead of the game at 14 with 13:42 left, but a 13-1 run over the next four minutes cut the margin to just two, 48-46, with 10:22 to go. After the Broncos tied the game at 54 with 5:03 remaining, WMU was able to shut down the CMU offense and pull off just the eighth 7/2 upset in MAC Tournament history, the last coming in 2006. The Chippewas shot 36 percent from the field and 32 percent from long range (7-for-22). The Broncos connected at 57 percent in the second half to finish at 44 percent in the game, 25 percent from three (3-for-12). The big difference in the contest came on the glass, where the Broncos enjoyed a 40-29 edge

Robbie Harman paced the Chippewa attack with 20, including four threes. Bitzer added 15 points and four boards. The duo played their final game in a Maroon and Gold jersey, combining for 59 percent of CMU's points on the day (35 of 60). Amir Rashid came off the bench to give the Chippewas a spark with 14 points, four boards, three assists and three steals. The loss ends the season for CMU at .500, just the fifth season in the last 30 the Chippewas have finished at or above .500. Bitzer finishes his career with 1,158 points, the 15th most in CMU history, and Harman finished his impressive three-point campaign with 233 career treys, 105 on the year.
