Carlton Fay scores 38 points to lead Men's Basketball past Western Michigan, 89-72

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Not since the days of Troy Hudson have the Salukis seen an offensive display like the one Carlton Fay put on Saturday afternoon at SIU Arena. Fay, a 6-foot-8 junior forward poured in 38 points to lead Southern Illinois to an 89-72 BracketBusters win over Western Michigan. He did it with the 3-ball -- making his first three 3-point shots of the game. He did it in the low post -- powering his way through defenders for seven more field goals. And he did it at the free throw line -- converting 15-of-17 on the afternoon. "I wasn't just sitting and shooting jumpers," Fay said. "I was taking the ball to the basket and using my pump fake to get guys in the air and go into them and draw some fouls." Fay had 22 points at halftime in a game in which the Salukis (15-12) never trailed and led by as many 18. "It was a special effort," said Saluki head coach Chris Lowery. "He deserves it -- he's worked hard. It was a great shooting display in the first half, and then he beared down and made most of his free throws in the second half." At the crowd's urging, Fay nailed a jumper with 24 seconds remaining in the game to give him the most points by a Saluki since Hudson scored 39 points at Indiana State nearly 14 years ago to the day -- Feb. 21, 1996.

"You could tell he was hot after he hit his first two shots, so we kept going to him," said Saluki point guard Kevin Dillard. "As a team, we all huddled up and said we wanted to go to him almost every time, and when we were able to get him the ball, he scored." While the Broncos (14-13) were hapless at trying to stop Fay, they also left open driving lanes for SIU's super-quick backcourt. Dillard scored 17 points to go with six assists, while Kendal Brown-Surles added 12 points. "I thought that the real story was their guards, Dillard in particular," said Western Michigan head coach Steve Hawkins. "He dictated the whole game. We just couldn't keep them in front of us. We got caught in rotations, and that's what allowed Fay to get it going early." Hawkins was in awe of Southern's passing.

"It looked like an NBA game, in terms of rotations out there," he said. "I thought (Fay) really benefitted from great guard play, not just good guard play -- great guard play." The Salukis led, 52-37, at halftime. It was the most points scored in a first half by a Chris Lowery-coached team and the most since Southern recorded 52 in the first half against Drake on Feb. 11, 2004. SIU shot 68 percent from the field in the half and 62 percent in the game. "I thought Southern played very, very well," Hawkins said. "They played like a veteran basketball team today. Those young guys played well, and the guys that do have some experience played like they had experience." Western cut the deficit to single digits once in the second half, 63-54, on a jumper by Flenard Whitfield with 9:02 remaining. But the Salukis countered with a 7-0 run that featured three free throws by Fay, two more by Justin Bocot and a steal and dunk by John Freeman. SIU held the Mid-American Conference's top scorer, David Kool, to his average -- 21 points. They were hard-earned buckets for the senior guard, however, as he was just 4-of-19 from the field. A dozen of his points came from the free throw line. Southern improved to 6-2 in BracketBusters games -- a tournament which has taken place annually since 2003. The Salukis also closed out this year's non-conference schedule with a 9-2 record, including a 6-0 mark at home.
