Men's Basketball Scores 79-70 Win at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Four players scored in double figures and Akron shot 53.3 percent (24-of-45) from the floor to defeat Western Michigan 79-70 on Wednesday in a Mid-American Conference men's basketball game at University Arena. Jimmy Conyers and Brett McKnight scored 11 points each for Akron (14-6, 4-2) and Chris McKnight and Nikola Cvetinovic had 10 apiece. Two other Zips, Darryl Roberts and Brett McClanahan, posted nine points. All of Roberts's points came at the free-throw line (9-for-10), where UA went 23-for-31 (74.2 percent). Conyers also had a team-high six rebounds.

The Zips never trailed and led by as much as 18 (49-31) early in the second half, after being up 35-27 at the break. Akron overcame David Kool's 30-point night for Western Michigan (11-8, 3-3). Donald Lawson had 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Broncos, who shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor. Kool became WMU's all-time scoring leader with 1,790 points. Mike Douglas had eight assists for the Broncos, whose six-game win streak at home came to an end.

Western Michigan won the rebounding battle 35-26, but was outscored by the Akron bench 36-19. Akron, winners in two of its last three outings, begins a three-game homestand on Saturday, when Toledo visits Rhodes Arena for a 7 p.m. ET match up.

David Kool takes his place as Western Michigan's all-time leading scorer

KALAMAZOO — It made for a bizarre scene: Fans rising to their feet with cheers and applause as Western Michigan University’s men’s basketball team neared an all but certain home defeat at the hands of Akron. But it meant the world to David Kool, even if it wasn’t how he wanted it to happen. Kool scored 30 points Wednesday night, eclipsing Manny Newsome’s 46-year-old school scoring record on a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left — 48 seconds before a 79-70 loss dropped the Broncos to 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play on the eve of a brutal road swing through Kent State and Buffalo. But if there is a time to focus on the greatness of one over the woes of a team, perhaps this is it. David Kool has scored 1,790 points in 121 career games over 3 1/2 seasons — three more points than Newsome put up over three seasons, from 1961-64. “There’s no doubt about it, we would have liked to have had it come a different way, but it happened,” Kool said. “I was overjoyed when I heard the crowd cheering as loud as they were with a minute to go. It just means so much to me.

THE RECORD SETTING FREE THROW
“It was weird when it happened because we knew we were going to lose, but it’s just one of those things that you’ve got to try to enjoy when you can.” Kool thanked everyone from his teammates and coaches to his family and God. Then his teammates, head coach and opponent’s head coach did their best to put Kool in perspective. “He’s a beast. He’s a good player, a team player,” sophomore Demetrius Ward said. “We’re proud of him.” “It’s monumental in terms of a basketball program,” Broncos coach Steve Hawkins added, after his team fell to 11-8 on the season. “It’s not every day that you have somebody break an all-time record of something. This isn’t like getting eight blocks in a game. It’s not having a night. It’s having a career. Said Akron coach Keith Dambrot: “I met David’s brother out there ... and he has that David Kool jersey on. I want one of those. That guy is terrific.” On this night, however, as was the case a year ago, one David Kool wasn’t close to enough to overcome a plethora of Zips. Akron (14-6, 4-2 MAC) hit 8 of 16 3-pointers and shot 53 percent overall from the floor. The Zips, who never trailed, took an eight-point lead into halftime and held the line there until WMU got as close as 77-70 in the final seconds. The defending MAC champs led by as many as 18 points (49-31), with seven players scoring eight to 11 points.

POINTS 1789 AND 1790. ALEX GOT THE ASSIST!!
“Their style of play,” Ward answered, when asked what makes Akron such a difficult matchup. “It’s just not one person that’s going to go off for 30. It’s like their whole team is good for eight or nine points. Like everybody can average eight or nine points. We basically can’t watch one person because other people can beat us also.” Each time the Broncos crawled within eight or nine points, Akron countered with a quick score or 3-pointer, a sign of a mature team. “We should (be),” Dambrot said. “We’ve been in three MAC championships in a row with the same guys for the most part. We’ve had some trouble on the road, which has been disappointing. Like, I don’t mind losing on the road, but we’ve had some meltdowns, so this was big for us.” Brett McKnight and Jimmy Conyers paced Akron modestly with 11 points each. Donald Lawson (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Ward (10 points) joined Kool in double figures for the Broncos, who missed their first nine 3-pointers. “They did an outstanding job of executing their stuff,” Hawkins said of Akron. “We tried to take them out of it, we tried to take them out of it with pressure, we tried all kinds of things to take them out it.” Akron has beaten WMU in seven of their last eight meetings, with the first six wins coming by double figures (as well as the lone loss, in 2008). “Do we have their number? I don’t think so,” Dambrot said. “I just think we just happened to play a good game and they played an average game tonight. And we were fortunate enough to win.” But not enough to steal the spotlight. “To be able to be around David Kool every day has been my privilege as a coach. I’m richer for it,” Hawkins said. Everybody that has played with him and everybody that has played against him has respect for him. ... I know we would gladly trade it for a win, but at the same time, you’ve got to stop and recognize the accomplishment. He’s a special kid, a special player.” And now he’s WMU’s all-time scoring leader in nearly 100 years of basketball. “The old saying is, ‘Records are always meant to be broken,” said Kool, who scored at least 30 points for the fourth time this season. “I’m sure down the line somebody will break it. But hopefully I can put some breathing room in there and hopefully it’ll stand for a while.”
