Alex Wolf, Western Michigan, Guard
Junior, Parchment, Mich. (Parchment)
Junior walk-on point guard Alex Wolf sparked Western Michigan to back-to-back victories in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. After scoring only 11 career points in 19 games, Wolf exploded for a career-high 15 points, career-high five rebounds, one assist and one steal in the Broncos' victory over Colonial Athletic Association preseason favorite Northeastern. Wolf hadn't made a three-pointer in three career attempts and hadn't attempted a shot this season before going 4-for-4 behind the arc against the Huskies. Wolf came back in the next game to hit each of his first two three-pointers against Southern Conference preseason favorite College of Charleston. He also added three rebounds, one assist and no turnovers in 21 minutes. In two games, Wolf averaged 11.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and one assist per game, while making 6-of-8 three-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws. Wolf also directed the offense with just one turnover in 45 minutes of action.

KALAMAZOO — For many of the Mid-American Conference’s better players, a divisional player of the week award is barely a footnote to the rest of their season. But when your dream was simply to be acknowledged as a legitimate Division I basketball player at your hometown university, a MAC West Co-Player of the Week honor is something to celebrate. As Alex Wolf put it after being named as such on Monday, “It’s just unreal.” It’s been that kind of week for the 5-foot-11 Parchment grad, who walked on at WMU more than three years ago wanting nothing more than a place on the roster and the best seat in the house on game days.
Wolf averaged 11 points and four rebounds in two games for Western Michigan University (6-5) last week — that’s as many points as he’d combined to score in 19 previous career games. After not playing at all in WMU’s loss to USC, Wolf played a significant role in wins over Northeastern and College of Charleston at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The junior point guard’s breakout game came against Northeastern on Wednesday, when he hit all four of his 3-point attempts, scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Wolf followed it with seven points (including two triples), three rebounds, an assist and no turnovers against Charleston, playing 21 minutes, including the stretch run of the 66-63 victory. Wolf shares the award with Ball State's Jarrod Jones, a far more heralded player. “Geez, they’re starting to pile up,” Wolf joked about accolades. “To even think that I’d be considered shows how well our team is playing,” he continued, “to have the seventh or eighth guy able to get this award.”
