KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Sophomore guard Mike Cavataio (Forest Hills, N.Y.) posted his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Western Michigan 64-54 at University Arena. The Crusaders fall to 0-6 on the season with the loss, while the Broncos improve to 2-2. Holy Cross opened game by jumping out to a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes of play, before Western Michigan responded with a 7-2 spurt to tie the score at 15-15. The Crusaders were back in front 21-19, when the Broncos went on an 11-4 run to claim a seven-point lead. Holy Cross came back to score the final five points of the half, and trailed 30-28 heading into the locker room.
The score stayed close early in the second half, and the Crusaders were down by just two points (41-39) with just under 12 minutes left to play. Western Michigan then scored seven straight points to extend its lead to 48-39. Holy Cross was able to close to within four points twice in the final three minutes of play, but the Broncos made all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Sophomore guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) finished the game with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while junior forward Andrew Keister (Galloway, N.J.) added 10 points and four rebounds. Western Michigan was led by Donald Lawson with 15 points and eight rebounds.
