CHICAGO - Three players scored in double digits and Loyola University Chicago (3-1) bounced back from a slow start to post a hard-fought 60-58 victory over Western Michigan (1-2) tonight at the Gentile Center. The Ramblers, who have now won three consecutive games for the first time since last December, have prevailed in seven of their last eight home games versus non-Horizon League opponents. Western Michigan jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before Loyola countered with an 8-0 run of its own, highlighted by five points from Walt Gibler, to claim an 11-10 advantage. The Broncos closed out the half with an 8-3 run to turn an 18-16 deficit into a 24-21lead at the half.
WMU stormed out to a 41-31 edge midway through the second half before the resilient Ramblers, who wiped out an eight-point deficit in the final minute at Holy Cross on Friday, made another charge. A lay-up by Terrance Hill, whose hustle and heart was on display all night, kick-started an 18-3 surge that gave Loyola a 49-44 lead, its first since the 4:27 mark of the first half. However, four straight Bronco points tied the score at 49 before Gibler's three-point play with just over three minutes remaining gave the Rambler the lead for good.
Loyola prevailed despite shooting only 33 percent from the field, but won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Western Michigan, 41-31, while the Rambler bench came up huge and owned a 25-5 edge in points scored. Hill scored a team-high 16 points and added five rebounds, while Gibler tallied 14 points and seven boards off the bench to lead Loyola in an extremely physical game. Andy Polka chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
