KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's basketball team welcomed fans to University Arena on Saturday morning for Breakfast with the Broncos. The Broncos provided food from Maggie's Catering and then provided highlights during three intrasquad scrimmages. Senior David Kool led the Broncos with 23 points, including 9-of-10 free throw shooting, three assists and three steals, while senior Martelle McLemore added 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Freshman Nate Hutcheson made a nice debut with a couple of three-pointers and one big two-handed dunk on his way to 15 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Flenard Whitfield added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Senior center Donald Lawson scored 11 points with eight rebounds, including 7-of-7 free throw shooting, while freshman guard David Brown scored 10 points. Sophomore center Muhammed Conteh pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, along with seven points, three assists and two blocks. Junior guard Alex Wolf and sophomore guard Mike Douglas tied for team-high honors with six assists each. The "Black" team won the opening 12-minute scrimmage, 26-19, behind 15 points from Kool and five assists and no turnovers from Wolf.
The "White" team won the second 12-minute scrimmage, 24-23, with six points from Kool and five points each from Hutcheson, Wolf and Conteh. The last scrimmage was just eight minutes and the "White" team prevailed, 10-9, with four points from Hutcheson and three points each by Brown and freshman Austin Harper. McLemore scored seven points for "Black." Several former Broncos were in attendance, including Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Joe Reitz, Andre Ricks, Andrew Hershberger, Nick Evola and Antwan Joseph. The Broncos open the exhibition season on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. against Kalamazoo College at University Arena and then play Spring Arbor on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The regular season begins on Nov. 15 at in-state rival Detroit.
